Confess by Colleen Hoover ♡♡♡.5

ConfessConfess by Colleen Hoover is the second book I've read by this author, the first one being Slammed. I didn't love Slammed, but I loved the cover of this book, thought it sounded intriguing, and decided to read another book by her.

Confess is the story of Auburn and Owen. Their meeting is fate and they don't want to give each other up, no matter the consequences.

I don't really have very strong feeling about this book. I didn't connect with the characters, and there is something that comes as a surprise (I won't ruin it for you, but I don't really enjoy it when characters have this certain thing, so I wish I would have known before I started it). And I really think that "thing" was not so great as far as Auburn was concerned, but it was also what really drove the story, so the story would have been much different without it.

I did enjoy the premise of the story, it was a bit like if Postsecret was shrouded in a love story and great art. But overall, my lack of connection to the characters made the book suffer for me.

Have you read any books by Colleen Hoover? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Better When He's Brave by Jay Crownover ♡♡♡♡♡

Better When He's Brave (Welcome to the Point, #3)Better When He's Brave by Jay Crownover is a book I have been waiting to come out for quite some time. I put off reading it for a while because I knew I would hate it when it was it was over. Well I couldn't wait any longer.

Better When He's Brave tells the story of Titus and Reeve. Titus is a cop set on protecting the Point no matter the costs, and Reeve is set on getting a chance to take down the guy who is destroying anything good left in the Point. They are in agreement on getting to the guy destroying everything.  Now they need to see if they can make it together.
Part of the reason I love the Welcome to the Point series is watch a story play out with bad guys with good intentions. I was wary of this story because until now, Titus had always seemed like such a good guy. But the story showed that hardly anyone is all good or all bad, something we explored with Reeve and Titus.

So far, there hasn't been a Jay Crownover book I haven't enjoyed. I hope that never changes. I am looking forward to getting Nassir's story and her new Saints of Denver series. If you're not reading Jay Crownover, you are seriously missing out. Get on it!

When Joss Met Matt by Ellie Cahill ♡♡♡.5

When Joss Met MattWhen Joss Met Matt by Ellie Cahill is the first book I’ve read by this author. I bought the book when it came up in my email as an offer from BookBub. It sat around on my Nook for a while, until right about a week ago, and I was pleasantly surprised with the book.

When Joss Met Matt tells the story of two friends who meet in college. When heartbreak strikes Joss, Matt offers to be her sorbet guy; he will help her forget her heartbreak through sex. It works, and they come back to each other time and time again to help each other forget all the things that make their other relationships fall apart. And during the times in between sorbet, they’re great friends.

I sincerely enjoyed When Joss Met Matt. The book was lighthearted, fairly clean (although I don’t mind when the books are a bit less clean, this story was light on the bedroom details), and pretty different from other books I have read recently. It took a bit of time to get used to the book going back and forth between the present day and different points in the past. It was a bit like watching Memento for the time (but much less confusing).

Small warning: this story takes place over about seven years. That was probably my biggest complaint about the book. Everything was a small snippet of the character's lives. I didn't feel I got to know or connect with the characters as much because of that, especially considering most of those encounters revolved around Joss and Matt's dating lives. This gave the book a bit of a YA feel.

I think this is a great read for in between the heavy stuff or if you’re looking for a book that’s not about to rip your heart out.

When do you need a light read most. Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Every time life throws Zoe Adler a curve ball, she changes her appearance. After her brother Wyatt’s death, she escapes to the city to teach a summer art program for kids. Her black hair goes blue, and she finds solace in the arms of a longtime friend, in his heart, and in his bed—but her guilt makes her unable to accept the love he wants to give.

AJ Pine  writes stories to break readers’ hearts, but don’t worry—she’ll mend them with a happily ever after. As an English teacher and a librarian, AJ has always surrounded herself with books. All her favorites have one big commonality–romance. Naturally, her books have the same. When she’s not writing, she’s of course reading. Then there’s online shopping (everything from groceries to shoes) and a tiny bit of TV where she nourishes her undying love of vampires and superheroes. And in the midst of all of this, you’ll also find her hanging with her family in the Chicago ‘burbs.

One Night by A.J. Pine ♡♡♡♡

One Night (Only You, #1)One Night by A.J. Pine is the first book in the Only You series. I have read other books by A.J. Pine so I was looking forward to starting this new series.

One Night is the story of Jess and Adam. Jess has a past she doesn't want anyone to know about. In an attempt to deal with her pain she is sleeping with a different guy pretty much every night. Kicking them out with a to-go coffee in the morning.

Until she meets Adam. He's one of the school's most popular basketball players. And he falls fast and easy for Jess. But she's a tough shell to crack, and Jess isn't the only one with a past.

I enjoyed getting to know these characters and watching these character figure each other out. The story deals a lot with guilt, and the difficulty of dealing with something that may not have been a person's fault.

I loved this story, and I can't wait for another story from A.J. Pine.

In the Dark by Monica Murphy ♡♡♡♡

In the Dark by Monica Murphy is the second book in The Rules series. I loved the first book, Fair Game, and I felt pretty good about this book.

Displaying ITD Amazon.jpgIn the Dark tells the story of Lucy and Gabe. Lucy is spending her summer at the beach house sitting, and her next door neighbor, Gabe, is hot as hell and completely irresistible. The only problem is they live in different states, and Lucy isn't the rich kid Gabe believes her to be. They're all up for a summer fling, but when their paths collide again in the fall, things start to change.

This boom started as a sort of naughty beach read for me. Then things got serious in the middle, which was a good change of pace. For the most part, I really enjoyed seeing these characters learn to share themselves with each other.

The two things I didn't enjoy were some skinny shaming and a few instances where the characters talked directly to the reader. The skinny shaming was reasonable for Lucy's character, as she is self conscious, but since Gabe admit her normally slept with pretty much any girl he could, it seemed out of place. Also, I think it's important to say that being healthy is what's important, not looking a certain way, so I was disappointed by Gabe referring to a skinny girl as a "bag of bones". Talking directly to the reader just pulled me out of the story.

Even with my complaint about the skinny comment, I really did love this story. I stayed up late and got up early to read this book. There was a bit of laughter and a decent amount of crying. And I'm really looking forward to getting Tristan's story in November. He is the character I feel is the least redeemable, so I'm interested in being proven wrong.

Excerpt:
He slips his hands beneath my dress as he continues to kiss me and skims his fingers along my thighs. I wrap my arms around his neck and hold him close, never wanting to let him go. He’s so strong, his body so hard and firm and muscular. I reach between us to finish unbuttoning his shirt, my fingers making quick work of the buttons until it falls open and I can touch his hot, smooth skin. I trace my fingers over his flat stomach, letting them drift down to the waistband of his pants.

I’m not feeling bold enough just yet to undo those pants though. I don’t want to rush this.

He runs his fingers up and down along the sides of my outer thighs and a shiver steals through me. His hands curve around, touching my ass and they grow still. I’m guessing he’s figured out I don’t have any underwear on. I break the kiss to stare up at him.

His eyes have a dark gleam to them and his smile is nothing short of gigantic. “You’re a bad, naughty girl, Luce.”

“I am? Why?” I ask innocently, even batting my eyelashes at him for good measure.

“You know why.” He shoves the skirt of my dress up to my hips, exposing me completely and he sucks in a harsh breath. “Look at you,” he says reverently, his gaze locked on the spot between my thighs.

The perv.

But hey, at least he’s my perv. For tonight.

A tiny part of me wishes I could keep him for all my nights.
